Among the core pillars of Tajweed, few chapters are recited more frequently than the Rules of Noon Sakinah and Tanween. Almost every ayah in the Holy Quran contains an instance of these rules. Mastering their distinction transforms ordinary reading into an authentic, melodious, and correct spiritual recitation.

Definitions: What is Noon Sakinah and Tanween?

  • Noon Sakinah (نْ): A letter Noon with a Sukoon (resting mark), devoid of any vowel (Fathah, Kasrah, Dammah). It remains pronounced both in writing and in speech, whether continuing recitation or stopping.
  • Tanween (ً ٍ ٌ): An extra non-written Noon sound that attaches to the end of nouns phonetically, represented visually by double fathah, double kasrah, or double dammah. It exists in verbal recitation when connecting words, but drops off when pausing.

The 4 Fundamental Rules

Depending on which Arabic letter follows the Noon Sakinah or Tanween, one of four distinct phonetic rules applies:

Rule Name Linguistic Meaning Number of Letters Letters Involved Ghunnah (Nasalization)?
1. Izhar (إظهار) Manifestation / Clarity 6 ء , هـ , ع , ح , غ , خ No extra Ghunnah
2. Idgham (إدغام) Merging / Assimilation 6 ي , ر , م , ل , و , ن Yes (4 letters) / No (2 letters)
3. Iqlab (إقلاب) Conversion / Substitution 1 ب Yes (with light Ghunnah)
4. Ikhfa (إخفاء) Concealment / Hiding 15 ت, ث, ج, د, ذ, ز, س, ش, ص, ض, ط, ظ, ف, ق, ك Yes (with complete Ghunnah)

1. Al-Izhar Al-Halqi (The Clear Throat Recitation)

If a Noon Sakinah or Tanween is followed by any of the 6 throat letters (ء, هـ, ع, ح, غ, خ), the Noon must be enunciated clearly, crisply, and without stretching or extra nasalization.

  • Example with Hamzah: مَنْ ءَامَنَ (Man 'Aamana)
  • Example with Haa: مِنْ هَادٍ (Min Haadin)
  • Example with Ain: أَنْعَمْتَ (An'amta)
  • Example with Haa: عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ ('Aleemun Hakeem)

2. Al-Idgham (Merging of Sounds)

Idgham occurs when the Noon Sakin or Tanween is merged seamlessly into the following letter, combined in the acronym Yarmaloon (يَرْمَلُون). It divides into two categories:

  • Idgham with Ghunnah (Bighunnah - 4 Letters: ي, ن, م, و): The sounds blend together while holding a smooth two-count nasal resonance.
    • Example with Yaa: مَن يَقُولُ → pronounced May-yaqool.
    • Example with Meem: مِّن مَّالٍ → pronounced Mim-maalin.
  • Idgham without Ghunnah (Bighayr Ghunnah - 2 Letters: ل, ر): Complete total merger with zero nasal sound.
    • Example with Lam: مِّن لَّدُنْهُ → pronounced Mil-ladunhu.
    • Example with Raa: مِن رَّبِّهِمْ → pronounced Mir-rabbihim.

Single-Word Exception: Idgham can only occur between two separate words. If a Noon Sakin is followed by an Idgham letter within a single word, it MUST be read with clear Izhar Mutlaq. This occurs in only four specific words in the entire Quran: دُنْيَا (Dunya), بُنْيَانٌ (Bunyan), قِنْوَانٌ (Qinwan), and صِنْوَانٌ (Sinwan).

3. Al-Iqlab (Transforming into Meem)

When Noon Sakinah or Tanween is followed by the single letter Baa (ب), the Noon is phonetically substituted into a hidden Meem (م) accompanied by Ghunnah and gentle lip contact. In the printed Quran, a miniature superscript Meem (ـۢ) is placed above the letter as a guide.

  • Example: مِنۢ بَعْدِ → pronounced Mim-ba'di.
  • Example: سَمِيعٌۢ بَصِيرٌ → pronounced Samee'um-Baseer.

4. Al-Ikhfa Al-Haqiqi (Concealment with Nasalization)

If followed by any of the remaining 15 letters, the sound of the Noon Sakinah is concealed midway between Izhar and Idgham. The tip of the tongue is drawn slightly away from the upper gums while holding a 2-beat Ghunnah through the nose.

Heavy vs Light Ikhfa: If the following letter is one of the five heavy Ikhfa letters (ص, ض, ط, ظ, ق), the Ghunnah must resonate with a deep, heavy tone (Tafkheem). If followed by a light letter (such as ت, د, س), the Ghunnah remains thin and soft (Tarqeeq).
